Speaking Volumes: Lili Kendall’s Top Music Moments of 2017

LA-based Aussie expat Lili Kendall has sent us through her top 5 music moments from 2017!

#1 – Lifetime by Lili Kendall
I may be a little bias, but this was my personal favourite music moment from 2017, because I finally got to let the world hear who I was after not releasing music for over a year. And that was super healing and freeing to share my art again!

#2 – Ctrl by SZA
Maybe even a contender for one of my favourites ever… SZA has made her place in my heart as a music icon. Ctrl was, to me, flawless in its vulnerability and imperfections.

#3 – #MeNoMore: An open letter to the Australian Music Industry
It has been so beautiful seeing the movement of empowered woman living their truth, spread across the globe, and transform different industries outdated power imbalances. When I received the #MeNoMore email from a fellow woman in the industry late last year,  the topic of abuse and men in our industry was coming up alot in my friendship group, with us all coming to the realization that none of us had talked to other woman about our own experiences and stories before now. That email was such an amazing moment to know that other woman were also brave enough to speak up and share, and ultimately change the future of our society and industry for generations of woman to come.

#4 – FlowerBoy by Tyler, The Creator
I just really loved this album. The musicality, the flow and the features. It was just beautiful.

#5 – Triple J moving the hottest 100 from Australia Day
It may not be music, but it is apart of our music culture and history. Triple J, as a huge platform, have a responsibility to use their power in a positive way, to help make change and raise consciousness. Announcing that the hottest 100 would no longer be played on Australia Day, was an amazing step forward for our australian music industry and a message to have reverence for our traditional owners and their perspective and history of this day. Thank you Triple J!

LA-based Australian artist Lili Kendall has announced her sultry new single Lifetime, a cosmic love song to a young partner. To accompany the track, Lili has also dropped a truly epic music video filmed in Las Vegas desert. Lifetime is bound to catch listeners off-guard – it’s a surprisingly mature love song from this young artist, who has already reinvented herself several times throughout her short career. But Lili is fully formed on Lifetime; relaxed and in control, her unmistakable voice glides above world-class production from her collaborator Deaneaux. Lifetime is the most appropriate name for this slow-burning track – RnB and hiphop influences are sprinkled throughout, but there’s a cosmic force underlying that somehow places this song on the edge of this universe and the next. Speaking about the track, Lili enthuses, “The song is about the chase that you and the other person are on at the start of a relationship. The back and forth, and lust, the want of each other. It’s also about being ride or die for that one person because you know that you have been lovers in previous lifetimes, and it is something worth fighting for.” Although the song speaks of many lifetimes, the clip manifests in this one – a modern day landscape in the middle of the desert, with Lili the force at the centre. The clip takes some classic Californian vibes and propels them into the cosmos; it’s eternally summer, in that eerie desert way where it seems that no life could ever thrive – and yet the clip celebrates everything that life has to offer when you share it with another person. Made in collaboration with her creative director Alaska Gedeon and director Child, Lili reflects on the clip, “We wanted the clip to be simple, elegant and vibey just like the track. The lyrics already paint such a picture for the listener, so i didn’t want the visual to have a full story written into it. We drove out to the desert heading towards Las Vegas on a Sunday morning and decided to shoot a whole bunch of performance pieces. When we got to these salt planes to film, there were motorbikes/ATVs riding around, one of the drivers let us shoot some scenes in his passenger seat, which were incredible – so thank you, free stunt man, for raising our production value!” Lili has settled into the creative LA lifestyle without a hitch, and is currently putting the finishing touches on her new EP. “My EP is finished being written and recorded and we are in the final stages of mixing and mastering it as well as making some amazing visuals for each song,” she says. “Expect to see/hear it early 2018…I am home in Australia for the holidays and will be visiting/working in Sydney and Melbourne during January, so I’m excited to be back on familiar soil and get into the studio with some local creatives.”
