J.I.D is an American rapper from Atlanta, Georgia. He started out in a rap collective,
‘Spillage Village’, formed by himself, EarthGang, 6LACK, Hollywood JB, Jordan Bryant, and
Mereba. In 2014, EarthGang supported Ab-Soul on tour, Earthgang allowed J.I.D to perform
during their set without clearance from the rest of the tour team. This moment turned out to
be a pivotal one, as this was where J. Cole first discovered him. J. Cole went on to sign J.I.D
to his record label, Dreamville Records, in 2017. Since then, he has collaborated with many
peers and rap elders, including Metro Boomin, Eminem, J. Cole, Clipse, and many more,
steadily building his reputation throughout the years. Through his rise J.I.D has paid it
forward by shedding light on other upcoming American rappers like Kenny mason, Swavay
and Chris Patrick.
J.I.D brought the energy to the stage for his “God Does Like World Tours” tour at Hordern
Pavilion in Sydney in May 2026. Delivering his raw bars with intensity and feeling, he created
an intimate atmosphere for old and new fans alike, despite performing to a larger audience
than his previous Australian tours. The intimate feeling was created without any additional
distractions, just J.I.D, the stage, his DJ, and the crowd completely locked in the whole night.
J.I.D is known for his penmanship and boom-bap beats reminiscent of 90s and 2000s
rappers like Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, and OutKast. The blend of old and new in his discography
appeals to many generations, which was clearly reflected in the diverse ages of attendees
on the night. From scanning the crowd you could see it was filled with hip hop heads,
parents and children, as well as die-hard fans who revelled at being deep in the crowd and
glued to the barricade, rapping along to every lyric.
The crowd stayed hyped from the first to the last track without losing any steam. The
chemistry between J.I.D and his DJ, Christo, made it feel as though he was performing right
in his hometown. Together, they brought the passion and energy of America’s Dirty South to
Sydney for one unforgettable night. The cultural exchange between Atlanta and Sydney is
something truly special.
With such a successful tour behind him, we can only hope that J.I.D’s visit allows for more
big tours from rappers from his pocket of hip hop, especially other upcoming artists. Tours
like these are vital to Sydney and Australia’s music culture as they bring together diverse
individuals with one thing in common, a great love for top quality music which is especially
important for the hip hop scene.
