My tips for writing the best possible country songs are not definite by any stretch, rather some ways in – ultimately everyone writes differently, whether by habit or due to context;
- Lose yourself
Let your mind wander through your memories and experiences. Think about how you felt then, and now. Or, take a long walk somewhere and wait for a little song to land on your shoulder and whisper in your ear.
- Dig deep
When lighting strikes, don’t let it go. Hold on tight wrestle it to the ground and explore it from every angle. Sometimes songs ‘just happen’ but as most songwriters know, it’s often an idea that needs hard work to be turned into a diamond.
- Get stinking drunk
If you’re over 18 (of course), have a big night, get rowdy, be over the top, silly, and even make a few mistakes. All great experiences to reflect on and write about.
- Pay attention to the rules
As the saying goes, “we ain’t building rocket-ships here” so listen to other artists, emulate and understand how they do what they do so well.
- Then, break the rules
Did I say follow the rules? Oh good, but once you have, break them. And something unexpected to your interpretation of the rules. Don’t be afraid to take risks, experiment and fail. It’s often what you do different, that people remember most. Good Luck.
