Beloved Melbourne outfit Alpine have returned! Today is the release day for their insanely-catchy new single, ‘Dumb’. To celebrate their long-awaited comeback, the band have dropped the video for ‘Dumb’ (directed by Marie Panguard) and announced a string of headline shows across June/July in Castlemaine, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide, Sydney & Brisbane.
The song came together during a Melbourne winter after keyboardist Tim Royall had returned from a trip to Japan, invigorated by the house and disco of the clubs and bars of Tokyo and Osaka. ‘Dumb’ is as playful as it is sophisticated, as nostalgic as it is modern, a balance that Alpine have always managed to strike with ease.
Lyrically the song is about being devoted to someone who isn’t devoted to you.
In lead singer Phoebe Baker’s own words, “It’s about how we can encourage our romantic imagination to a point of ignorance. Hopeless optimism on a ship of sinking love. There is a somewhat perverse enjoyment found when flirting with someone when ultimately you know it’s going to hurt. There are elements of play to be found within the slow dissolve of a relationship. Satisfaction can still be gained in the midst of an ending.”

Primarily ‘Dumb’ is about how someone can make you speechless and nonsensically talkative at the same time.
‘Dumb’ follows the release of the band’s first two albums, Yuck (2015) and A Is For Alpine (2012). A is for Alpine peaked at #1 on iTunes and #11 on the ARIA Album Charts, and was awarded iTunes “Alternative Australian Album of the Year” and The Age EG “Australian Album of the Year”, while Yuck was released to rave reviews, debuting at #16 on the ARIA Album Charts and featuring radio hits ‘Foolish’ and ‘Damn Baby’.
