SPEAKING VOLUMES: The Winter Gypsy

In Speaking Volumes, we ask an artist some questions about themselves, followed by “Five Quick Questions” randomly selected from our question database. If you have a random question to add to our database, email us.

We caught up with indie boys The Winter Gypsy, after the release of their latest single and video Boyke.

We heard “Boyke” is based on a family dog. Can you tell us more about the dog?

She was a beautiful Ridgeback, only 9 months old. Bojke just had so much energy and love to give. There was never a dull moment with her. I’m sure the two brothers had a tough time training her up since they also had chicken in their backyard; she’d always chase them around.
The pace on her was insane. No one could catch her. Such a humble pup.

Rest easy, Bojke.

Where did the inspiration for the music video come from?

Bojke was our main focus. I came up with the idea and pitched it to Gerard who helped me story board everything. I really wanted to focus our setting around our neighbourhood, because that’s where Bojke grew up.

Who would you most liken your music style to?

The Middle East, The Paper Kites, Death Cab For Cutie, Bon Iver.
Love them all to bits.

Touring as a six piece must be tough sometimes. What are some challenges you’ve faced while touring?

Fitting everything and everyone in the one van. We have a beautiful Tarago that is still kicking on with everything it’s got. Without it, we’d be so screwed.

You have recently played Palm Creek Folk Festival and have Nimbin Roots Festival coming up. What festival would you love to play?

I would love to play the Eaux Claires Music & Arts Festival in America. The music festival was founded by Justin Vernon (Bon Iver). They promote independent music; and I think we would fit right in with the music over there. It’s a big dream.

 Five Quick Questions:

What is the one thing that should be taught in school that isn’t already?

How to earn under the uni threshold, and still be a king.

What fad do you think should come back, and which should disappear forever?

Beyblades. I freaking loved them back in my childhood haha. Replace them with those stupid Fidget Spinners.

What is the best air guitar song?

I always play air guitar to Californication – Red Hot Chili Peppers. I have no idea why.

Do you have a pre-show ritual?

Definitely a glass of wine before, during and after I hit the stage.

 Define love in four words.

Beautiful, tough, connection, bond
